Leopard to Ship this Spring

Filed in OS X by admin at 11:47 am No Comments »

According to Michael Garetenberg, a Jupiter Research analyst, Leopard will be released on schedule. Last week Gartenberg spoke to apple regarding the rumors that Leopard will be delayed. He was told that the rumor was incorrect and that Leopard is still expected to ship this spring.

The Sage believes that there is a lesson to be learned by all of this tomfoolery. Don’t believe the hype. This past week The Sage found his RSS reader filled with stories of Leopard delays. He did not read much into it knowing that Apple has not indicated a delay and that there was still 3 months left until summer. Additionally, to believe that Apple would delay release of Leopard to improve compatibility with Vista is just ridiculous (shame on you DigiTimes). Within one short week we have come full circle. One could have read countless articles and know now what was told to them at WWDC 2006. Leopard will ship spring of 2007.

Lorem Ipsum Love

Filed in Productivity, Applications by admin at 7:51 pm No Comments »

Anybody who spends time doing typesetting work, including web design, understands the value of placeholder text. Lorem Ipsum text is exactly that, placeholder text. As the Sage has been preparing his blog he needed place holder text in the body. Thus the previous posting (Trial Post) which contains two paragraphs of dummy text.

Lorem Ipsum text can trace its origins to a popular Latin text published in 45 B.C. There are a number of ways to obtain Lorem text. Dreamweaver and many other applications have plugins, either built in or provided by a third party, for generating lorem ipsum text. Another resource is lipson.com. The website gives a tidy little current event on Lorem Ipsum text (Who?, What?, Where?, When? and Why?). More importantly, the site has a lorem ipsum generator which you can use to generate text based on x number of:

  • Paragraphs
  • Words
  • Bytes and
  • Lists

The power comes when combining lorem text with an application like TextExpander. To put the lorem text in the previous post, all the Sage did was type 6 keys (l-o-r-e-m-2). In order to place lorem text easily all you need to do is make a snippet with TextExpander. The steps for creating a Lorem snippet in TextExpander are as follows:

  1. Use the Lorem Ipsum generator at lipsum.com to generate 2 paragraphs of Lorem text.
  2. Copy and Paste the text into the content portion of the TextExpander Preferences Pane.
  3. Decide on an abreviation for the snippet and enter it into the abrbreviations pane (e.g. lorem2)
  4. enter your abbreviation whenever and wherever you need some lorem text

You can take this a bit futher if you would like and generate abbreviations for 1, 2, 3, etc. paragraphs of Lorem Text (The Sage actually has snippets for 1-5 paragraphs of Lorem text).

It is worth mentioning that this trick can also be used with Typinator or TypeIt4Me. Both applications work similarly to TextExpander though the Sage uses Textexpander. Any of these applications are worth their weight in gold for anybody. Not only do they provide a system wide autocorrect feature, but they can save you hours of time. TexpExpander, Typinator, and TypeIt4Me all offer a free 30-day trial period.

Apple TV: Should I buy or should I… No!

Filed in Apple TV by admin at 3:34 pm 1 Comment »

With the Apple TV soon to launch, I have found myself asking several questions.  Most importantly, would I buy one?  The answer is very simple, it depends.

For me, it comes down to one point. When will Apple deliver HD content via iTunes.  For the consumers with large flat panel displays, the current “near DVD quality” just won’t cut it.  I for one, have turned into an HD snob.  I refuse too watch SDTV for one reason.  It looks horrible.  The expanded/streched/whatever viewing format looks bad. The native aspect ration of SDTV waists an enormous amount of HD screen real estate.  Additionally the pixelation is an eye sore.

So, will I buy an Apple TV.  Yes, once they offer at least 720P.  Once that occurs I will be happy to purchase an Apple TV and will likely abandon my digital cable service to boot.  For the amount of TV I watch, it would be much cheaper to buy my programming a la carte.  In addition, there will be no need for a DVR.  An HD antenna would fill in that small void for live sports programming (although I watch those events sparingly).

All being said, I am curious what others think about Apple TV and if and why they are planning on buying one.  It is strange that this product requires an HDTV yet Apple does not offer HD content.  I am sure that iTunes will offer HD content in the future.  But why would I want an Apple TV before that date. I would love to hear from anybody reading. Apple TV, Apple
